The 49 Club

The 49 Club is a social forum for those who have worked for the Nature Conservancy and the Nature Conservancy Council. It was formed in 1991 and took its name from the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act, 1949. That piece of legislation allowed the Nature Conservancy to be set up and led to the important conservation work that followed.

The 49 Club has now been extended to include all the bodies which have replaced or evolved from the old Nature Conservancy :

  • Natural Resources Wales / Countryside Council for Wales
  • English Nature / Natural England
  • Scottish Natural Heritage
  • Joint Nature Conservation Committee
  • Institute of Terrestrial Ecology / Centre for Ecology & Hydrology.
